Aluminum PCB/Metal Core PCB

Single-sided aluminum PCB is composed of three layers, which are circuit layer (copper foil), insulating layer and metal base layer. For high-end use, it is also designed as a double-sided board, and the structure is a circuit layer, an insulating layer, an aluminum base, an insulating layer, and a circuit layer. Multi-layer aluminum PCB is made of ordinary multi-layer board, insulating layer and aluminum base.


Aluminum PCBs are commonly found in LED lighting products. There are two sides, the white side is for soldering the LED pins, and the other side shows the natural color of aluminum, which is usually coated with heat-conducting gel and then in contact with the heat-conducting part.

Aluminum circuit board Stucture

Aluminum-based copper clad laminate is a metal circuit board material, which is composed of copper foil, thermal insulation layer and metal substrate:

 

Copper foil: equivalent to the copper clad laminate of ordinary PCB, the thickness of copper foil of the line is loz to 10oz. The circuit layer (that is, copper foil) is etched to form a printed circuit, so that the various components of the component are connected to each other. Generally, it is required to have a large current-carrying capacity, so thicker copper foil is used, and the thickness is generally 35μm to 280μm;

 

Thermal insulating layer: The insulating layer is a layer of thermally conductive insulating material with low thermal resistance. The thermally conductive insulating layer is the core of the aluminum substrate. It is generally composed of a special polymer filled with special ceramics. It has low thermal resistance, excellent viscoelastic properties, thermal aging resistance, and can withstand mechanical and thermal stress.

 

Metal substrate: generally aluminum-based copper-clad laminates and traditional epoxy glass cloth laminates, etc. The metal base is the supporting member of the aluminum substrate, which has high thermal conductivity. It is generally an aluminum plate, and a copper plate can also be used. It is suitable for conventional machining such as drilling, punching and cutting.

Single sided Aluminum PCB with single component mounting

Single-sided aluminum substrates are generally printed with lines on one side and smooth wireless lines on the other. The most common aluminum substrates on the market are single-sided aluminum substrates. For power aluminum substrates, etc., the upper side is the circuit, and the lower side is connected to the shell or heat-conducting glue for heat dissipation. The single-sided aluminum substrate replaces the previous FR4 and PCB fiberglass boards, with high emphasis, good heat dissipation, not easy to break, and good flexibility.

 

The thickness of the single-sided aluminum substrate is 1.0mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 3.0mm, 5.0mm, etc. Generally, it is determined according to the overall thickness of the product.

 

Single sided Aluminum PCB with single component mounting structure is the simplest and easiest to fabricate. Circuit is etched directly on the copper layer of the aluminum PCB. The heat is transferred from the component to the copper layer, PP layer, and then to the aluminum layer.

 

Double sided Aluminum PCB with single component mounting

Double-sided Alu PCB structure is circuit layer, insulating layer, aluminum base, insulating layer, circuit layer. Double sided Metal core (MC/Alu) PCB is a metal core circuit board with good heat dissipation. The Double sided Metal core (MC/Alu) circuit board has traces on both sides, but to use the traces on both sides,

there needs to be proper trace connections between the two layers.

 

Aluminum PCBs can be designed as double-sided PCBs when a single-sided PCB cannot contain all circuits. The structure which is 2 layers aluminum PCB of the double-sided assemble component  is similar to  the structure which is the 2 layers FR4 PCB of the double-sided assemble component. However, the space between the PTH and the aluminum base is filled with resin.Heat is transferred from the component to the copper layer, then to the PP layer, and finally to the aluminum layer.

Multilayer IMS PCBs are made of multilayers of thermally conductive dielectric. These structures have one or more layers of circuitry embedded in a dielectric, with blind vias serving as thermal vias or signal paths.

 

The heat is transferred from the component to the outer copper layer, then to the L1 PP layer, further to L2 copper layer, then to L2 PP layer, and finally to the aluminum layer. Therefore, the thermal conductivity of a 4 layers PCB is lower than that of a single-layer PCB and a 2 layers aluminum PCB with a dual component mounting surface.

Flexible Aluminum PCB

One of the latest developments in IMS materials is flexible dielectrics. These materials provide excellent electrical insulation, flexibility and thermal conductivity. When applied to flexible aluminum materials, products can be formed to achieve various shapes and angles, which can eliminate expensive fixtures, cables and connectors.

 

Hybrid Aluminum PCB

Most commonly a 2- or 4-layer subassembly made of traditional FR-4, bonding this layer to an aluminum substrate with a thermal dielectric can help dissipate heat, increase rigidity and act as a shield. There are also the following features

(1) Lower cost than building all thermally conductive materials.

(2) Offers better thermal performance than standard FR-4 products.

(3) Expensive heat sinks and associated assembly steps can be eliminated.

(4) Can be used in RF applications where the RF loss characteristics of the PTFE surface layer are required.

(5) Use component windows in aluminum to accommodate through-hole components, which allow connectors and cables to pass connections through the substrate while solder fillets create a seal without the need for special gaskets or other expensive adapters.

 

Multilayer Aluminum PCB

In the high-performance power supply market, multilayer IMSPCBs are made of multiple layers of thermally conductive dielectrics. These structures have one or more layers of circuitry embedded in a dielectric, with blind vias serving as thermal vias or signal paths.

 

Through Hole Aluminum PCB

In the most complex structures, a layer of aluminum can form the "core" of a multilayer thermal structure. Aluminum is pre-plated and filled with dielectric prior to lamination. Thermal material or subassemblies can be laminated to both sides of the aluminum using a thermal adhesive material. Once laminated, the finished assembly resembles a conventional multilayer aluminum substrate by drilling holes. Plated through-holes go through gaps in the aluminum to maintain electrical isolation.
